Two Keys to Avoiding Mobilegeddon

April 21 Google announced Mobile-friendly updates that ultimately boost mobile search rankings to sites that are designed as mobile-friendly. Nicknamed “Mobilegeddon” by some analysts, webmasters and designers are hopefully scrabbling to verify that the pages on the sites they’ve created adhere to these new updates. With this drastic change to mobile search, there’s a lot of lessons Google is indirectly pushing with this update.

The following two keys will keep your web presence and brand thriving to mobile and desktop audiences:You can’t ignore Mobile! Whether your audience is the media or consumers, the vast majority of people are consuming information from a mobile device, primarily smartphones, which this update directly affects. According to the Pew Research Center, 64% of Americans own a smartphone, and Mobile now exceeds the PC for internet use.

1. Is your Site or Newsroom Properly Configured for Mobile-friendly Design? Why make it hard on them to read your latest news, or research your latest products on a mobile device? With a mobile-friendly setup, and even more so with a mobile responsive design, you make their visit to your site more enjoyable for consuming information, whether that be a press release, story, image or video.

2.  Fresh & Easy Content! Its one thing to make sure your site or newsroom is mobile-friendly to assist in your search rankings, its another to make sure you are publishing fresh content to your site. One of the other important algorithms Google looks for to raise your ranking is that you are posting new and relevant content - that could be your latest news, articles, blogs, stories, etc. - but that mobile-friendly site you built won’t have visitors without interesting digital assets to consume.
